Why should we use wood?

Although the research and development of timber is low and the technical backing and lack of expertise within individual organisations is very poor, wood should be our number 1 choice for construction.

Timber is a very flexible versatile material and is widely accepted within the construction industry, log building, framing, structural, cladding, flooring, with high strength to weight ratios and vast durable qualitys with outstanding environmental benefits.

We keep on using materials that are widely accepted in construction, the largest of which is concrete. Environmentaly concrete has a high energy usage with high CO2 in production, a very low usage of recycled materials, concrete is non renewable, but yet in our times of global warming will still use it as a major material source within domestic housing. The material can be slow to construct with, it can be cold and unappealing, weather tempertures and conditions have a bearing on the build with high energy costs to heat building in colder climates.

Studies into our levels of consumption and pollution reveal that as a global society we are living beyond the regenerative capacity of our planet, if everyone lived as we live in the UK we would need three planets, living unsustainably is resulting in the degradation of our inviroment and human wellbeing.
Over all change is needed we need to learn more about the advantages, quality, beauty and warmth that wood has to offer, most of all its the best enviromental choice.

Russia and many of the Baltic States have been producing timber buildings for centuries, many of which are still standing today. They can’t all be wrong!!! Timber is a natural source of  insulation which helps to keep a constant temperature within the building and reduce the need for high energy consuming heating systems. Couple that with solar heating and ‘go green’.

Keycraft Log Homes source and supply log homes in Nottingham, the Midlands and across the UK.
Larger log buildings are sources from Europe and smaller structures are supplied by Ludguard.
Keycraft Log Homes have a range of standard buildings as well offices and garden buildings and cabins. All designs can be adapted to personal taste and bespoke log homes can be produced to your specifications. As building control in the UK differs from many other parts of the world the main body of the building is sourced from abroad and other materials such as doors, windows, roofing, insulation etc is sourced from the UK ensuring that our buildings comply.

Don’t confuse our homes with ordinary “ log cabin” type structures. The house walls are constructed entirely from solid beams manufactured by laminating together strips of pine under intense (16 BAR) pressure to produce the ultimate in strength, durability and longevity. Standard log buildings use solid logs where the moisture is held in the centre of the beam and very gradually dries out. The pressure that results causes the beam to crack and warp, with obvious detrimental effects to the integrity of the building. While this may be sufficient for temporary buildings, it is certainly not acceptable for a permanent structure built to withstand the test of time. Remember this method of construction has been developed to endure the extremes of weather seen in Northern Europe.

Windows and doors are sourced from local manufacturers whether it be timber or PVCu that you prefer. All windows and doors are housing grade and offer a thermal grade c value.

The final look is a matter of taste. Internal or external wall finishes can be added as required. The beam walls can be painted or left with a ‘natural’ look to suit your preference and the local environment. Materials such as roofing are also a matter of your own preference. We understand that if you are building a home of your own, you want it to have the look and feel that suits you and not to be dictated to by being forced to accept a manufacturers “bog standard” appearance.
